Featured Story: The Free Soul

Our Featured Story for Nigeria’s 59th Independence Day: The Free Soul: The Story of a mythical man and his love for his country Nigeria…

“Come here my boy”

The man said. He was a tall man, gruffly and white haired old man. He sat under a large mango tree in a sparse land with a hill close to the tree. The man was addressing a ping wandering boy passing by. The boy taken unawares by the sight of the man turned sharply in surprise.”Come,” the man repeated, “Don’t be afraid, I won’t hurt you.”

He smiled as he repeated the last word and that invited the boy over. Holding the boys hand affectionately the man said,

“My dear boy, climb over to that hill there and tell me what you see.”

The boy did as instructed and came to the man saying,

“I see nothing but sparse land and people going about their business.”

The old man smiled knowingly and said in a croaky voice,

“Tell me what you know about this land.” After a pause the boy replied, “Nothing much, just what everybody else knows.” `Are you sure?” The man Inquired

“Yes, I am,” the boy replied.

“Sit my son, I have something to tell.” Intrigued by whatever the man was going to say, the boy crouched at the feet of the man and listened attentively. The man cleared his throat exaggerating the process and said,

“I have lived for long and yet knowledge about this land never ends. For beginners, I was thought in school that this land is bordered in the North by another nation called Niger, in the Northeast by another nation called Chad, in the East by a larger land called Cameron, in the West by Benin and finally in the south by the ocean that brought the white men, the Atlantic Ocean.” “Hmmm,” the boy murmured in approval and understanding. The man began again,

“I know that this land has more than 250 ethnic groups, cultures and traditions so diverse. Times have changed because now this country has a bicameral system of government, about 700 local government areas, 36 states and even I I geographical zones and 6 geopolitical zones.”

“Okay,” the boy replied trying to assimilate all the fact at a go.

As the man cleared his throat once more and smoked from a pipe he brought out from the breast pocket of his long traditional gown, a woman heading for the market with pretty materials on her back passed by inattentive to those under the tree as she struggled with a child in her hand. Like a bulb suddenly lighted over his head, the old man said,”Ah! Such a woman.” He continued by lamenting to the boy saying, “MY SON, I shall show you that a child’s and his mother, it’s like a nation and its people.” He went further and relayed details about how when a child has cold, it’s like corruption and poverty.

“Is the mucus stuck in the nose of the child as they are in the habits and lives of people? But you know what?” the man said ” the love that the mother nurtures the child with is like the love the people use to fight against corruption and poverty.” The boy then smiled, in silence and understanding.

At that moment a group of children appeared, dressed in different attires and having different hairstyles. The man’s gaze followed them into the horizon and then he said to the boy “Come closer, I need to tell you about the children who just passed.” He began by relating in almost silent tones the story of those children. He related about how they came from different parts of the land but still played together, set traps for wild animals together and even ate from the same bowl. He then further relayed that the one with a large white wrapper hung across his neck came from a place filled with rich mineral resources that helped the entire land.

The man continued saying that the cultural diversity of that place filled with the likes of Masqueraders, lesser gods like Amadioha and festivals like New Yam Festival fuelled the child’s love for his land. The man then said to the boy, that the second child dressed in a large buba and sokoto meaning dress and trouser that were colorfully dyed came from a part of the country where the dense tropical hinterland climate encouraged growth of a large variety of crops and special fruits such as hazel nuts and where gods such as Ogun and Osun are treated with severity and this made the child love his land more.

Finally the man told the boy about the last child that wore a beautiful large agbada that comprised many folds. The old man said the child was one that came from a cattle rearing community that was endowed with crops such as groundnuts and millet and these and more made the child love his land.

The boy then spoke saying, “I wonder how they can be so different and still live together?”

“The people of this land are strong people, they adapt and survive wherever they are, and they fight and settle and even marry one another no matter what.

Their love for their country and land binds them together” the man explained. Then he said to the boy, “I am to take my leave now. duty calls”

“But,” the boy asked, “who are you and what is it you want me to do?”

The man then replied saying in a laughing manner. “I am a free soul.”

A gush of wind swept by and when the boy turned, the man had disappeared.

As the dust settled, written where the man sat were words “I love my country Nigeria” and the boy in them could see the wonderful future that awaited him.

Youthful Thoughts: Nigeria @ 59

Happy independence Nigeria!

I heard you were older today.
I see you’ve grown…. Or have you.
A nation where the future of the future is shapened by the elders working behind closed doors and forgetting the truth is never hidden.

Therefore making the future worse than the past by corrupting the minds of the future.
Maybe I’m negative on the positive day but that’s your point of view. My view is realistic.

Its imperative we learn to change the suffering and smiling mentality.
I feel we all are just too lazy to start the change because its strenuous.

But if 1, 2, 3 people decide to try… then 4, 5, 6 people encourage them, maybe 7, 8, 9 people would be encouraged to act. And my country would change to be better.

Remember the fight for independence and all it cost us, then using that, understand how much we have to fight for the future of our children.

The fight isn’t truly over.. We’re celebrating too early. The fight is still here.
I wonder when we would decide to be truly independent.

Poem: Love Song

Our Strong Pepper Love
By assurance
A Love Song For Oyindamola

This one’s for you Lady Van De Kamp!

My love for you is like the most strong pepper,
Your face reminds me of loving butterflies,
Together, we are like sandwiches and ketchup.

Oh darling Oyindamola,
My strong pepper,
My loving potato,
The perfect companion to my sandwiches soul.

Poppies are red,
Skies are blue,
I like airplane museums,
But not as much as I love loving with you!

Oh darling Oyindamola,
Your ears are like intelligent watches on a spring day,
You’re like the most pretty soldier to ever walk New York.

Your loving butterflie face,
Your ketchup soul,
Your intelligent ears,
Your pretty soldier being…

How could I look at another when our strong pepper love is so strong?

Sniper, not the way forward

Sniper is not an easy killer, it’s an organ eating ,liquid monster.

Sniper is a DDVP 2,2.

Ok…sniper is a Dichlorovinyl Dimethyl phosphate compound, produced by ndi Swiss Nigeria Chemical Compound.

When you blindly drink sniper, that you want to kill yourself, this is what will happen to you….

1. Your eyeballs will swim in its own water as forced tears escapes from its reservoir

2. You will have serious discharges from your nose…oh, it’s late, you will have no control over these happenings now.

3. A banging migraine will set in. You will hold unto your head and scream like it wants to explode..

4. Your chest will tighten, forcing close , making sure that your body have lost control over it.

5. You will be on the floor by now, screaming through all your senses, as saliva pours out from your mouth like a slow, mini river.

6. You will mess yourself up with vomiting, and you will long to vomit your intestines too, to be relieved, cos you are now in so much regrets for taking the sniper, but ah,ah,ah…sniper must finish it’s job.

7. The rest of the crises comes in turns as you shit all over yourself …sweating ,muscle fasciculation, your blood pressure will go down low, convulsions, then, your life will be squeezed out of you through the shutting down of your lungs and kidney….cardiac arrest will aid your departure.

The last thing that will die in you, is your brain that will take in every information before shutting down. It will allow you watch yourself, give up the pained ghost.

That’s why they will meet you when you are dead, with your eyes open, drooling, a lot of poo in your underwear, your body twisted in a strange position as you tried to fight off the pain and crises, and they will observe the signs of struggle in the room you took the sniper…cos you will climb the walls, tear the sheets, rip some of your hair off, just to quail the killing pain.. some run off from their houses, screaming for people to help them, that they drank sniper, that’s how they ended up in the hospital.

If you are lucky, your system could be flushed when it has not shut down everything, but you will never remain the same, if you are unlucky, you will die on your way to the hospital, or in the hospital…but in your dead eyes, the last memorial record in it, before your terrorized brain, shuts down, is “regrets”.

You can see, it’s not an easy death.

Should in case you are among those, waiting on queue to snipe yourself out..the dead cannot come back to tell you their experiences with sniper…that 100ml ,200/300 naira otapiapia, is a terminator..a gradually, ruthless, wicked terminator.

You are deceived when they make you believe that sniper is the easier way out, no, it will slowly devour you from the inside, as it shuts down your organs one by one in a tearing order.

It’s only a bullet to your head, measured well, not to miss the brain, that can be the fast killer you anticipated, not sniper.

If you are depressed, drink more of cold juices, while you think your way out. Suicide is not a joke.

Sniper will make you see your ear without mirror, will force you to beg for your life back, but it will scream back at you from your system, to let it do its job.

It will give you a slow, dragged, struggled, regrettable death…

Why don’t you use that strength of fighting a painful death, and fight your way out to live?

You can see that suicide is more painful than depression.

You don’t wanna mess with that insecticide called sniper. Trust me..no think am, no take am.

SUICIDE IS NOT AN OPTION TALK TO SOMEONE!!!!!

Nnakwue Kenny

Miss Ajayi Omoshola Face of UNILAG

Let’s Meet Miss Ajayi Omoshola, 1st Runner Up at Face of UNILAG 2.0 Online Photo Contest Organized by THE KAS PLUG in an exclusive interview.

Congratulations for contesting and finishing as Face of UNILAG 2.0 Contest 1st Runner Up, Can we meet you?

I’m Ajayi Omoshola, a 200 level student of Biology at UNILAG, from Osun State.

What’s your current relationship status?

I’m not single, I’m in a relationship.

As someone in a relationship, do you think relationships are distractions to students?

I don’t think they are, all I’ll say is you know what you want, if you can’t handle it don’t go into it, any relationship that you are choked up in, call your partner’s attention to it and if it persists please let go.

What are your hobbies?

My hobbies are cooking, singing, travelling and seeing movies.

How did you get to know about the contest?

My senior sister sent the info to me on Whatsapp.

What motivated you to participate in the contest?

With all sincerity, my loved ones did, Olamide, Keme to mention but a few.

What can you say about the organization of the contest?

Hmm, not bad but I guess better things can be done like meeting the contestant in person is a good idea, pictures are only reflections of a person, a lot of people are more beautiful in person than in pictures, the qualified contestants should be asked some questions, that will help in knowing their abilities, the price of the first runner up and second runner up should have a difference etc.

Thank you for sharing, those are good suggestions for the organizers to look into. What were your challenges during the contest and how were you able to overcome them?

My first challenge was fear, I was too scared of losing, I was able to overcome that by opening up to people, they helped by reassuring me that I can do this, the other challenge was getting likes, I just created a new Instagram account which I was not very active on, I don’t have a lot of contacts because my phone got stolen, but with the help of those same people I was able to get there, sincerely I can’t appreciate them enough.

How do you feel emerging a finalist?

I feel very good, yes I can do this, no fear whatsoever, I am really happy.

What do you plan to do with the fame and popularity the contest have given you?

I intend to open a brand, the fame and popularity I’ll get from the contest will help me grow faster, and yes I look forward to being a sponsor to Face of UNILAG soon.

Where do you intend seeing yourself in the next 4 years?

Out of school definitely, in the modelling world, also a great business woman, working so hard to achieve my dreams.

Finally, Any Shout-out or final words?

My first shout out goes to my parents, they supported me so much, next my darling Olamide, Keme, Dunamis, Ghost, Sapphire, Bola, my roommates, Adunnie everyone who helped this little girl do this, I love you guys a lot and I really appreciate your kind gestures, even those I have never met before, indeed what’s worth doing is worth doing well, Thank you!

Thank for your Time, It was nice meeting you, Once again Congratulations and all the best in your future endeavours.

I love listening to music, writing, browsing, getting facts and getting money

Please can you share with us your relationship status?

I’m Single.

Do you think relationships are distractions to students?

Not really, I think it depends on the particular student and how serious he or she wanna be. Relationship is not a distraction if one can maintain it but if one can’t, just stay single till you finish your education and you will do fine in relationships later.

Nice point of view, How did you get to know about the contest? How did you get to know about the contest?

I got informed about it by a course mate (Ibukunoluwa).

What motivated you to participate in the contest?

The campus model worldwide prize of a thing, and my social lifestyle.

What can you say about the organization of the contest?

It was a very great one, searching for beautiful faces to contest and creating awareness and publicity for people to participate, Kudos to the Organizers.

What were your challenges during the contest and how were you able to overcome them?

(Laughs) The contest wasn’t an easy one, at first it was easy for me to gather likes within two days it was massive and it was like I was leading, then like day 4, it started getting down because everyone on my contact seems to have voted, then I started telling people to help me repost. I even met with some WhatsApp influencers to promote me it didn’t go viral enough. I was kind off behind not until I resumed and I started meeting people one on one to kindly help my picture everywhere I go, I walked to people’s room in my hostel just to help like my picture. That was how i was progressing, till I finally entered the TOP 5.

How do you feel emerging a finalist?

(Smiles) I’m so happy, my efforts didn’t go in vain.

What do you plan to do with the fame and popularity the contest have given you?

I hope its goes more massive, so my dream to model and get ambassadorship should come through.

Where do you intend to see yourself in the next five years?

A 24 years old international model, preaching about the black skin, who will definitely give back to the society. Kas has given me this platform and I won’t take it for granted.

Finally, Any Shout-out or final words?

I’d like to say a very big thanks to the organizer of “Face of Unilag” and the CEO of Kasplug in the person of Otusanya Samuel Adebola for reaching out for me in the search. My shout-outs goes to my very good friends, too much to mention but I hope they see this, (they know themselves) for the biggest support they gave me during the competition, they stood and rooted out for me, the influencers that promoted me, Thanks to everyone on my contact list, I appreciate everyone’s effort, May God bless you all, I love you guys. Peace….

Thank for your Time, It was nice meeting you, Once again Congratulations and all the best in your future endeavours.

Exclusive: Meet 10 year old Talented Maryann

We have here in our midst, a young and intelligent child comedian, Let’s get to know her better in an exclusive interview.

Hello Dear, It’s nice having you here.
Please can you tell us about yourself and what you do?

I’m Maryann Ikechukwu aka Talented Maryann, from Isuofia in Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra state, but I’m based in Lagos State.

I’m Ten years old and the forth child of a family of five. I am also a JSS 1 student of Jay Academy.  I’m a comedian.

What a young and brilliant personality we have here.

When did you start comedy and who or what inspired you?

I started comedy this year. Actually what inspired me is that, I love making people happy. And I thought of how to use just some few seconds or minutes and make people smile.

It all started when a relative of mine packed in to our neighborhood. He use to come to our house and sometimes to our shop. Each time he came, he would be telling me that I am very funny.

He laughs loud at anything I do. So, on a particular day, we were watching Xploit Comedy, he now asked me if I can act comedy. I said yes with full assurance. He said he will look into that. The following week, he came up with a concept and we kicked off.

Your story can attest to the fact that success is bound to happen when desire meets opportunity.

What are your hobbies and what else do you love doing apart from comedy?

My hobbies are dancing and reading novels. Apart from comedy, I love Music.

Who’s your role model in the entertainment industry?

I so much love MC Lively and Broda Shaggi. I love MC Edopikin. My role Models are people who ditch out good comedies.

How do you cope with comedy and your education?

I do rehearsals on Friday and we do video shot on Saturdays and Sunday. It doesn’t really affect my education but it has not been easy.

Sometimes, I do come back from school and run some shoots. It’s not really easy. But nothing good comes easily, so I just have to cope.

Who has been most supportive since you started your career?

My Director is extremely supportive to me. My parents are also greatly supportive. Sometimes, people around help me too.

What challenges have you encountered so far and how have you been tackling them?

One of my challenges for now is the fact that I lack some facilities and am planning to start travelling outside Lagos to act. The logistics is also another challenge. Inorder not for our challenges to restrict us, we have been making use of the facilities around us for now, pending on when we can get more equipment and the necessary logistics to act and shoot outside Lagos.

The entertainment industry is filled with many great talents like you, what makes you differrent and outstanding?

What makes me different and outstanding is that I believe in myself. I believe in what I do in my own different way. I don’t copy from people.

Being unique is special.

What will you like to become in the nearest future?

I will keep being an entertainer, I would love to be a musician.

Entertainment is a great choice of career.

Who is your favorite musician?

Tiwa Savage is my pick for Nigerian Music and Internationally, Beyonce and Nicki Minaj.

Wow! Cute choice of music.

What’s your ideology about life and where you intend to see yourself or what do you intend to achieve in the next 6-7 years?

Life is like a football game. It’s not all about running to score but being good and creative on how to score when the attackers and Midfielders join the defenders to stop you from scoring.

In the next 6 to 7 years, I see myself as a very famous superstar.

Such great perception about life tells how wise you are. Do you have any words of wisdom for us today?

He who laugh last laugh best, He who laugh last laugh best, na so Miriam take turn mad woman for street ooo

I must draw tattoo, I must arrange Dada, na so upcoming artist take turn native doctor ooh.

Talented Maryann, Wisdom Full your head o.
Do you write your scripts yourself?

Yes but most times, my director brings a written script. We look into it and decide on what to do.

What’s your favorite video so far?

My favourite video is AMERICANA. You can watch it on my Instagram page or YouTube channel.

And finally who do you want to send a shout out or special greetings to?

Yea, I would say a big shout out to M.C Casino, Dasaint, MC Edopikin, Edobabe and Home of laughter comedy.

I would also say a big shout out to all my fans and my potential fans worldwide. You guys are all amazing.

And also a big thank you to Much More Naija for this opportunity.

God bless you all.

Follow Talented Maryann on Instagram @Talentedmaryann to stay happy.

Who is grooming the boys?

Right from when I can remember being a girl, I was bombarded with subtle, Covert, overt training and awareness of my femininity and responsibilities as a female.

I had baby toys, I bathed them, fed them, backed them, put them to sleep when they ‘fretted’ I recall putting my dolls to my flat chest to give them suck. I was grooming for my role later in life.

I was made to help out in the kitchen, taught to set the table, taught to keep the house clean. Tidy up the bed, sweep and Wash. And I was always told “when you get to your husband’s house..” “When you marry.. In your husband’s house…”
“When you have your children…” We watched our mothers practice what they taught us, so, it wasn’t just empty lectures.

Today, we are where our mothers used to be and we are repeating history. Teaching our girls to be ladies, wives, mothers.

But Who is teaching the boys?

Who is teaching them to be good men, gentlemen, husbands, fathers?
A properly raised lady meets a badly raised man in marriage. That marriage is dead on arrival.

A girl was practically raised learning how to keep a home and submit to her husband. But who helped raise a boy teaching him how to love his wife and earn respect and submission? Who is raising the boys to know that it is okay to enter the kitchen and cook for his wife and kids?

Who is teaching them that they can also make their beds? Do their laundry? Help with groceries?

Before you label me an extreme feminist, hear me out? Were you not cooking before she came into your life? Were you not doing your dishes? Making your bed? Sweeping your apartment? Were you not? Life is responsibility and responsibilities do not end with marriage!
In my house, everybody cooks. Everybody makes their beds. Do their dishes.

My son is home from school for some work experience training. As usual, homecoming is not just a period to deplete my kitchen and sleep, it is time for training. It has now become a joke in my house for me to start a sentence and my son ends it wit “.. So that your wife will…. ” For example “Baba, you should have washed your coffee mug instead of leaving it in the sink… ” and he would cut in with “so that my wife will not be upset… ” Or ” So that when I marry.. ”

He comes back from work in the evenings. I try to get dinner set before he returns. He is forever grateful for a hot meal when he gets home. When he got very comfortable with the routine, I tested him. One evening, he came back home and there was no dinner. The young man went to the kitchen and made dinner for everybody.

One day he came home and was like ” What did you people cook?” After my lecture, he will never repeat that question to anybody again, let alone his wife. Never!
We have gone over the lectures and training on how to treat a lady in public.

“If you come home without your shirt because you used it to wrap a stranger (a lady especially) whose skirt or trousers got stained, you are a gentleman indeed” He has heard this sermon over and over.
He knows he should not be seated in a bus if a lady (especially the elderly male or female) are standing.
He knows he is to let a lady walk into a door first.
His ears a full. Just like mine were as a child.

Who is grooming our boys?
Who is teaching them the future is hard work?
That being a man is not a walk in the park?
That it is wrong for them to be served on the dinning table and for their dishes to be cleared after meals?
That they should wake up at dawn like the girls do and clean the car or do some other house chores as well?
That they can cook for the family?
That they can do the groceries?
Like I jokingly tell my son, “don’t let any girl wag her tongue and curse me that I did not raise you well” and he would have a fit of laughter.

Parents, start now. The boy will wince his nose and react initially, but you can make learning fun and they will look forward to it.
Tomorrow’s rest begins from today. Let your your son grow into it: being responsible and accountable.

Raise your boys well now even if he is an only child who arrived after years of waiting!
One over pampered and over spoilt son cannot multiply into two sons!

Please feel free to drop your thoughts!

Historial and Political Perspective of Ora Land

The countrified town of Ora in Ifelodun Local Government in Kwara State no doubt is politically significant in any electoral contestation in the politics of Kwara State. Ora represents a microcosm of the State of Harmony and the town reminds us of a serene and peaceful environment adorned with greenish farmland that is highly fertile for agriculture but which lies under fallowed.

This is this instant reminder for any first timer visitor to Ora, its unfortunate its gory image of a town that has suffered years of abuse, neglect, marginalization and political exclusion in the hands of the political class in the politics of Kwara State.

Ora is a town in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara state which arguably is the largest Local Government Area in Nigeria with its headquarters situated in a small town called Share where the current governor of Kwara State Alhaji Fatai Abdulahi hailed from. Ifelodun Local Government Area in Kwara State according to National Population Census has well over 1, 000 towns and villages with its population unevenly distributed among the 9 districts and 18 political wards that made up the Local Government Area. But in these demographics above is Ora, a major district town with over 8 to 15 communities under its authority. Ora people are majorly known for subsistent farming and petty trading of such farm produces like: yam, cassava, maize, soya beans, locust beans and groundnuts.

The electoral significance of Ora in the entire Ifelodun Local Government Area cannot be over emphasized and cannot also be compared with other districts in her local government area. This is evidence in Ora’s demographics which hovers between fifty to hundred thousand people, arguably the highest population that any major district has in Ifelodun Local Government Area today.

Ora town is one of the most naturally endowed with divine resources in Ifelodun Local Government Area in particular and Kwara State in general. The tallest mountain in the entire Kwara State is found in Ora, there are also claims of unmined precious stones in commercial quantity in this town.

Ora’s has one of the best fertile land in Kwara State that virtually any crop can be cultivated on it, the serene environment and its beautiful landscape view are untapped tourism economy for Kwara State and Nigeria in general just to mention but a few.

The Ora rock in Ifelodun Kwara State is predominantly identified with Kwara State.
An age long praise song about Ora rock rendered by the Magaji of Ora community, Alhaji Fatai Ajadi, gives credence to the recognition accorded to the sprawling and magnificent creature.

“Ora befits Ifelodun Kwara State, Ifelodun befits Ora just like Mapo Hill befits Ibadan land.
The Magaji said that Ora rock became so famous, through his forefather, who hailed from Ora. “Oloora of Ora, Akolade was an hunter. He was on hunting expedition to this place. He actually cleared his way to the place and not that he planned to settle at a particular place. He met some people here though”, he said.

Ora rock, located at Central of Ora town ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, also provides panoramic view of all sides of Kwara from its topmost spot. It is thus not surprising that the place was of significant importance during the old times war periods.

Aside from the historical background of Ora rock serving as an abode and strategic spot for warriors in many ancestral wars fought prior to founding of Ilorin the gigantic and sprawling rock is believed to possess spiritual essence.

Many people that had visited or still visit the rock to offer prayers to God over one issue or the other concerning their lives and family attest to the conviction that their prayers are answered. It was also gathered that eminent personalities visit the rock for prayers for election victory and political appointment.

“Muslims and Christians come here for prayers when they know God answers prayers here. Christians started coming here before the Muslims, particularly when they realized that prayers are answered here. Many important personalities in politics, business and what have you visit here for election victory, appointment and the rest.

Also speaking, one of the spiritualists that stay around the rock who belongs to a white garment church, Prophet Isaac Joseph attested to efficacy of powers on the rock.

“Faith is the key word here. Prayers are answered right here even before one leaves. One can stay for five minute and meet God. Some people are told to visit here for fasting and prayers that will last for certain number of days. God does wonders here to the extent that requests from God are given with faith.

“Muslims that come here are with the belief that prayers are answered here. We all believe we worship one God. I stay here to pray for those who come to me. I tell them all I see and they are told all to do and they go to do it to better their lives. Muslims also come here in groups to offer prayers”, he said.

Characteristics of the Ora rock include marked white lines at some parts of the rock leading to the topmost spot. These lines provide direction for easy way to climb the rock. One is also expected to remove foot wares at the base of the rock before climbing it. This practice is obeyed by all visitors to the place and it says a lot about regard and neatness of the rock surface.

Another feature is that of different marked hollow spots on the rock. It was gathered that the hunters and warriors used the spots to grind edibles like pepper, and so on in the olden days.

Prophet Michael Ayodele Aroja fromEkiti state also said that he had been climbing the rock since 1979 to offer prayers because of his faith in God, who he said, had been answering his prayers. ‘‘It’s rock with God’s spirit,’’ he said.

Ora’s indigenes are some of the highly educated in the entire Kwara State, highly placed in many professional endeavors. The current king of Ora, Oba Adebayo Akolade is highly educated and was a retired Assistant Comptroller General of Nigerian Immigration Service before his ascension to the throne of his fore bearers. But with all the economic potentials, political significance, tourism potentials and natural endowment of this countrified town called Ora, it is a town best described as being politically and economically marginalized in the politics of Kwara State.

In the area of social and infrastructural development, Ora have never had it so good either. Ora town as of today cannot boast of good and stable pipe borne water system from the government. In today’s 21st century, our people still put on their cherished local pots on their heads and grudgingly walk to distant streams in faraway forest to fetch water in order to drink.

This is due to the non provision of hygienic drinkable water by government. The only government educational institutions that were established about 30 years ago… the primary and secondary schools are in deplorable state. Currently, there is virtually absence of well equipped medical outpost or primary health institution in Ora.

The town unlike many other towns in the state still has records of astronomical increase in maternity death rate.

Finally, it is often said that the growth of people and development is the highest form of leadership. The current plights of Ora town, in Ifelodun Local Government Area, Kwara State needs urgent attention by the political class of Kwara politics. The pathway to the great future for Ora town and indeed for all in Kwara should include an articulated policy of political inclusion. If Ora people are fairly included in the politics of Kwara State, this will create an avenue through which economic growth, social justice, tourism and agricultural sector development and most of all political inclusion can be achieved for all, it is until then we can say boldly that we are in the state of harmony where everyone is included in the political permutations of our dear state.

Sex, Love and Virginity

These days, a lot of ladies complain that guys walk away from them simply because, they refused giving them sex, some are even tempted to give away their virginity just to keep the guys.

Permit me be to very blunt here:

Virginity may not be the real reason why the guys go away, yes, no doubt, there are several guys who want sex, and if they don’t get it, they walk away.

The problem may not be the virginity or the sex.

The story of the Ten virgins in the Bible reveals that both the wise and the foolish were virgins; the other Five were not allowed seeing the bridegroom not because they were virgins or because they lost their virginity.

NO! But because they were foolish and they were called foolish because they had no EXTRA OIL. And the EXTRA OIL here is CHARACTER!

Most girls do not have extra oil to sustain any relationship, while many brag about their virginity, that’s all they have to offer.

Aside your virginity, what do you have to offer to a man?

Can you support him spiritually?

Can you support him physically?

How about mentally?
All you do is demand money for bag, shoes, clothes, and outing, making him spend unnecessarily.

Have you ever sit him down, and you help him plan about his future?

Has he ever seen you as someone he can confide in?
How many times has he come being in a state of dilemma seeking advice from you?
Rather than jumping from one club to another.

And for the virgins, they forget that virginity ends after the wedding, but EXTRA OIL continues.

Frankly speaking, no one is perfect but try to be a woman that a man will always regret losing for the rest of his life.

Be that woman that your man can never afford to lose to another man.
Build your man to your taste.
And stop looking for a ready made husband.

Force yourself on that rich dude that you didn’t work with to achieve what he has and hear the story of your life from him one day.

Did You Work With me to achieve all I’ve got?
Ever since you’ve entered this house, what has added to what you met?

There’s just nothing as best as building up your man yourself. And you will forever earn his respect .

I hope this piece of advice is useful to all singles and married.

Depression: Meaning, Symptoms, Risk Factors and Treatment

What Is Depression?

Depression (major depressive disorder) is a common and serious medical illness that negatively affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Fortunately, it is also treatable.

Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home.

SYMPTOMS OF DEPRESSION

Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Symptoms must last at least two weeks for a diagnosis of depression.

Also, medical conditions (e.g., thyroid problems, a brain tumor or vitamin deficiency) can mimic symptoms of depression so it is important to rule out general medical causes.

Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life.

Depression can strike at any time, but on average, first appears during the late teens to mid-20s. Women are more likely than men to experience depression. Some studies show that one-third of women will experience a major depressive episode in their lifetime.

Depression is different from Sadness or grief/bereavement, the death of a loved one, loss of a job or the ending of a relationship are difficult experiences for a person to endure.

It is normal for feelings of sadness or grief to develop in response to such situations. Those experiencing loss often might describe themselves as being “depressed.”

But being sad is not the same as having depression. The grieving process is natural and unique to each individual and shares some of the same features of depression. Both grief and depression may involve intense sadness and withdrawal from usual activities. They are also different in important ways:

In grief, painful feelings come in waves, often intermixed with positive memories of the deceased. In major depression, mood and/or interest (pleasure) are decreased for most of two weeks.

In grief, self-esteem is usually maintained. In major depression, feelings of worthlessness and self-loathing are common.
For some people, the death of a loved one can bring on major depression. Losing a job or being a victim of a physical assault or a major disaster can lead to depression for some people.

When grief and depression co-exist, the grief is more severe and lasts longer than grief without depression. Despite some overlap between grief and depression, they are different. Distinguishing between them can help people get the help, support or treatment they need.

RISK FACTORS FOR DEPRESSION

Depression can affect anyone even a person who appears to live in relatively ideal circumstances.

Several factors can play a role in depression:

Biochemistry: Differences in certain chemicals in the brain may contribute to symptoms of depression.

Genetics: Depression can run in families. For example, if one identical twin has depression, the other has a 70 percent chance of having the illness sometime in life.

Personality: People with low self-esteem, who are easily overwhelmed by stress, or who are generally pessimistic appear to be more likely to experience depression.

Environmental factors: Continuous exposure to violence, neglect, abuse or poverty may make some people more vulnerable to depression.

HOW DEPRESSION IS TREATED

Depression is among the most treatable of mental disorders. Between 80 percent and 90 percent of people with depression eventually respond well to treatment.

Almost all patients gain some relief from their symptoms.
Before a diagnosis or treatment, a health professional should conduct a thorough diagnostic evaluation, including an interview and possibly a physical examination.

In some cases, a blood test might be done to make sure the depression is not due to a medical condition like a thyroid problem. The evaluation is to identify specific symptoms, medical and family history, cultural factors and environmental factors to arrive at a diagnosis and plan a course of action.

Self-help and Coping

There are a number of things people can do to help reduce the symptoms of depression. For many people, regular exercise helps create positive feeling and improve mood. Getting enough quality sleep on a regular basis, eating a healthy diet and avoiding alcohol (a depressant) can also help reduce symptoms of depression.

Depression is a real illness and help is available. With proper diagnosis and treatment, the vast majority of people with depression will overcome it. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression, a first step is to see your family physician or psychiatrist.

Talk about your concerns and request a thorough evaluation. This is a start to addressing mental health needs.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, or “talk therapy,” is sometimes used alone for treatment of mild depression; for moderate to severe depression, psychotherapy is often used in along with antidepressant medications. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has been found to be effective in treating depression. CBT is a form of therapy focused on the present and problem solving. CBT helps a person to recognize distorted thinking and then change behaviors and thinking.

Psychotherapy may involve only the individual, but it can include others. For example, family or couples therapy can help address issues within these close relationships. Group therapy involves people with similar illnesses.
Depending on the severity of the depression, treatment can take a few weeks or much longer. In many cases, significant improvement can be made in 10 to 15 sessions.

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) is a medical treatment most commonly used for patients with severe major depression or bipolar disorder who have not responded to other treatments. It involves a brief electrical stimulation of the brain while the patient is under anesthesia. A patient typically receives ECT two to three times a week for a total of six to 12 treatments. ECT has been used since the 1940s, and many years of research have led to major improvements. It is usually managed by a team of trained medical professionals including a psychiatrist, an anesthesiologist and a nurse or physician assistant.

Medication

Brain chemistry may contribute to an individual’s depression and may factor into their treatment. For this reason, antidepressants might be prescribed to help modify one’s brain chemistry. These medications are not sedatives, “uppers” or tranquilizers. They are not habit-forming. Generally antidepressant medications have no stimulating effect on people not experiencing depression.

Antidepressants may produce some improvement within the first week or two of use. Full benefits may not be seen for two to three months. If a patient feels little or no improvement after several weeks, his or her psychiatrist can alter the dose of the medication or add or substitute another antidepressant.

In some situations other psychotropic medications may be helpful. It is important to let your doctor know if a medication does not work or if you experience side effects.

Psychiatrists usually recommend that patients continue to take medication for six or more months after symptoms have improved. Longer-term maintenance treatment may be suggested to decrease the risk of future episodes for certain people at high risk.
